Comprehension is a tough skill to teach, but it really is the most important!  It becomes increasing more important as students enter grades 3-5.

To teach students comprehension we must get them to think about what it is they are reading.  I have found several strategies that really help students think about thinking.  I am sure most of you are familiar with these researched-based activities and if you are not, I hope you try some out with your whole groups or during small group instruction.  Here are some links from websites I have found very useful (just click on the link):

For grades 3-5- strategies include QAR, RAFT, Metaphors, Think Alouds, and Inferential Reading.  A  great site that details each strategy and how to use it.

All you wanted to know about inferences.  Since inferences are on every state test this site would be helpful.  Geared for grades 4 and up.  It also has a list of children's literature that lends itself to teaching inferences.

This is one of my favorite sites for teaching higher order thinking skills.  Lots of great activities to use in cooperative groups settings.  When you wantto revivalize your reading lessons you'll have no problem finding a lesson and plugging it into your plans!
